There will be no more “village.” “South Lincoln” commercial district was created in the 1800s, when the railroad came through. Lewis St. became a hub for pickle production (hence, “the pickle factories”-still standing ) and Underwood Ham. The iconic trademark on the cans was developed when they were here in Lincoln. The brick building on Lewis St. was the livery and then fire station. The large Mansard roofed building on the corner of Lincoln Rd. and Lewis St served as a PO and general store. A free-standing train station was also there. The little red building later housed a drug store and served as the “train station.” Joe Hurd’s was the local grocery store and butcher. That late became Mike Farney’s bike shop, and then, a bank, and now a dental office.
The development brought several new businesses that thrived for a decade or 2. Now, we are faced with the potential loss of the retail hub. The loss of the bank may be the canary in the mine. Perhaps the town might consider purchase of the mall and creation of locations for things that would sustain the feeling of a village. But, that would take investment-taxes. It would take serious public and transparent analysis of the actual return on investment. What would the actual return look like if we were simply reinvesting in the mall, and not looking for revenues for land acquisition and the support of staff? There are serious trade-offs to consider, but, perhaps, worth a conversation. If the mall were to go away, as we know it, where would we gather? Where would we have the all-important and regular “social accidents” that build cross-generational community-the accidental encounters while at the PO, Donelans, the Twisted Tree?
