But Mark, according to Bates, Kelly did agree to drop his salary. According to Bates it was Bates himself who wouldn't agree to Kelly's proposition. Personally I find it incredible that Bates wouldn't take the risk on Kelly - there's no obvious financial reason for that rejection - which gives rise to the speculation that there were other factors at work. Dare one think perhaps Wise's relationships with his players?
