Well, that would explain Captain Clogger. But seriously, the theory doesn't work. Mr Beast would have been rubbing his hands with glee at promotion to the Premiership. He has something of an ego (not a crime, in my view) and it would be one in the eye for Roman Abramovich and all the chairmen who thought they'd seen the last of him.
Financially, going back would have been worth £25 million. Sure, some of it would have gone to the bondholders and other creditors. But not all, and not enough to clear the debt, thus making it in the creditors' interest to let us keep enough cash to attempt to stay up, giving them future pay days. Worst case consequence of promotion? Some of the debts cleared, relegation, a demoralised but more experienced squad and probably a change of manager, and 2 more parachute payments. I can't see where it would be worth throwing the match. Football matches are difficult to throw, unless maybe they bribed Captain Clogger Mk 1. Don't these rumours really start because Saint Kevin the Martyred confided something to Chris Moyles that shocked the Viduka-like DJ? Probably it was the brazen 10,000th repetition of "When I came here it was just me and Gary Kelly" that made his hair stand on end.
