True BUT.... the -48 source is there to get sufficient
loop current with a long loop.

What the Original Poster must do is measure the loop CURRENT
with the POTS set on the KXT, and compare with that current on
the trunk.

You might also try reversing the polarity. I have no idea why
a set would perform badly [vs not at all..] with swapped polarity,
but it is easy to try.
