Re. John Francini:

Interesting experiences you had with that switch. I thought SxS would be lower bandwidth than XB due to the crosstalk from other selectors stepping (those wonderful background noises we all remember fondly), but I guess I was mistaken. You were also ahead of me with computers; I got my first one (Mac SE) in the late 80s.

When I was in highschool, the local CDO (small CO, "community dial office") was right next to where I lived. We had 5-digit local dialing in that town. In college we had a WE SxS system, which was plenty of fun including the SF signaling on FX trunks (yes, I can whistle that tone:-) Some of the overseas students from Japan had to be taught how to use the rotary dial telephones because they had never seen one back home, i.e. all their phones were already DTMF. When it got replaced, I was able to pick up some of the rotary switches before they were hauled away in dumpsters. I also have an old GPO (UK) rotary PAX (2-wire intercom system) in my collection of "antique" telephone equipment, and a bunch of 332 and 706 sets to go with it.
