I went to a composite kit manufacturer's shop for a job interview last year. They had a huge gantry that they used to CNC cut the prepreg graphite that they used in their molds. Just cut out a bunch of fabric pieces, slap them in the mold, but on the vacuum bagging film and slap them in the oven.
They also had a huge CNC gantry machine that they used to cut a very rigid foam that they made their molds with. I spoke to them about doing a mold for the new airfoil wing skins, but it is pretty expensive. Just the foam alone was a few thousand dollars.
