Glass the wing so there is only a 1/8" gap except for the 1" X 3" area by the fittings. Silicone the 1/8" gap and mold fiberglass inserts that fit flush in the 1" X 3" cutouts.
That is the way mine was with the exception that I had not made the fiberglass inserts yet. I was still using the original covers for the holes which were made of aluminum rectangles a little biger than the holes with tabs on the inside and two springs inside to squeeze them to the wings.
