   I'm not sure what you mean. When you have a file that's versioned and also 
part of .gitignore, this file is versioned - any changes to it will be 
indicated in git status, git add, etc. It's also committed as if .gitignore 
didn't include that file. This rules out any "ignored local modifications", 
unfortunately.
