hi ! I would personally advice you to wait till the Preet vihar fly over is complete. Many companies who have right now restrcited their services to preet vihar are willing to expand their area but can not do so, due to the uncertainity of the IPX link bridge. Ever since the fly over was built in the "rong" direction ! GOSH ! Can u imagine a 30 crore project in the rong direction !!!!! No ISP is willing to cross the Preet vihar boundary. To name a few Inter Globe, Fast net, Duke net etc. Even spectra net and Primus India networks are expected to launch their services in this area as soon as the fly over is complete. >From what I have heard till now, about DSL dishnet,During the day the service is pathetic. In preet vihar, during the day, the avg data transfer in C block is around 0.5k/sec. Their customer support is offline and extra charges are levied for every visit. The the so called "techincal support", are people who will faint at the sight of Linux. Besides their service comes out to be much more expensive than dial-up, and lesser in terms of actual value. Their rent is system is very confusing, 1) very high installation. 2) They will charge you some percentage in post dated cheques for 1 year, 3) Apart from that is a monthly minimum support rent.which you''ll deposit every month. 4) added hourly rate (of Rs. 10 i think) to your usage. 5) And still claim a hassle free "permanent" connection! I wonder what were they trying to do ???? A better idea would be to talk to a few fellow users in your local area and buy a line from vsnl(costs around 8k/month for a 64k line). I tried this in my colony, and failed miserably ! :o( Daddy's/dadagees seem to have more say in my colony. Phew ! Also if you wait for 5-6 months DSL will be launching its new range of services, (once their joint project with FLAG/Bharti Tel) picks up. Presently your cable guy must be charging you close to 1.2k per month or so, even if you get 2k/second for 14-15 hours a day, its still better than dialup and cheaper. bottomline stick with ur cable guy for 5 months, rite now DSL is not worth the money. I have been running around trying to find a decent/permanent net connection for past 6-7 months. Went to every local provider and wrote emails to almost every ISP in delhi, but till now, cable + VSNL dial-up seems to be the best option. Regarding your main query, will DSL work with Linux, I have no idea, my freind in preet vihar doesnt like linux and didnt allow me to install it and test it. :o( Amit. ================================================ To subscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with subscribe in subject header To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in subject header Archives are available at http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd%40wpaa.org =================================================
