Well, the answer here is simply one of higher education. To get a degree in computer science a college graduate has to complete several math requirements including algebra, trig, and calculous. I also remember having to take a statistics class, some physics, all in addition to my programming courses. The end result is these highly trained graduates are the guys who get picked to work for the big name game companies.
