Hi Jim,
Yeah, as a programmer who learned all I know from books it amazes me how 
you did it by investigating the code on your own and experimentation 
etc. Though, I think that kind of learning is only possible with basic 
style languages. Some languages like C++ is hard enough to learn with a 
book let alone totally on someones own.
As long as the formula works I don't think anyone cares. There have been 
many times when I should have done a calculation in calculous but used a 
trig formula instead, less accurate, but way easier to program and for 
me to test in my head.
