Yeah, because there are lots and lots of EV owners who would gladly risk a police record for an irreplaceable $100 EVSE. and then we've got super villains like this guy.... "Police seize more than $50 in wire from nation's wealthiest crystal meth dealer..."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU2SWgP9qao Of course there is the huge market in stolen 14-50 plugs and pigtails. I suppose a bike lock and cable to the portable EVSE would be too complicated to implement ..? Then you have the option of a surveillance camera watching the entire parking lot...but again, after spending $40,000-$100,000 developing a computer controlled charging system, who would want to install a $100 surveillance camera and what apartment dweller would want their valuable car and stuff being surveilled 24/7?
I'm not entirely unsympathetic to the problem of theft....but just want to put it in perspective On Friday, December 6, 2024 at 07:18:07 PM PST, Rush via EV <ev@lists.evdl.org> wrote: Cor, Nope, sorry didn't misunderstand the project at all. Let me explain my concern more simply. 1. EV owner will drive up and plug in his/her/their EVSE (or standard mobile charger as you call it), start charging and go to his $500k-$1m Condo. 2. 'a short while later' nefarious guy/gal/person will unplug the 14-50 Plug from the 14-50 Outlet since it is not locked in place. 3. Nefarious guy/gal/person will take his Klien/Craftsman/Harbor Freight wire/cable cutter and cut the cord as close as possible to the J1772 type 1 or 2/Tesla Plug/Gun. 4. Nefarious guy/gal/person will walk/run/sneak away with a EVSE(or standard mobile charger as you call it) but with the EV Plug/gun cut off. 5. Nefarious guy/gal/person now has the choice of a) selling the copper, b) selling the EVSE(or standard mobile charger as you call it) but with the EV Plug/gun cut off on eBay/Marketplace/Craigslist or c) getting a new J1772 type 1 or 2/Tesla Plug/Gun and either using it or selling it as a complete working unit. 6. If I/TucsonEV start getting requests to attach a new J1772 Plug on the end of a 'my dog chewed it off' EVSE, then I'll know where it comes from. Capice?
