I just reconnected the battery and switched on to boot into Parted Magic. However, I missed the Bootloader selection screen, so it booted into KDE. Lo and behold, there was no warning message and the battery icon says 6% *charging.* Maybe the guy at Rapid PCs simply didn't push the connector home fully, or he got some dirt in there. Here's hoping.
