The laptop runs perfectly with the battery removed, so it is not a
complete write-off :-)

So the only question remains; is the fault with the charging circuit on
the motherboard, or with the battery itself?  If it's the charging
circuit, then the laptop effectively become a desktop with limited
roaming capabilities; not good at the WMT where there the few mains
sockets aren't necessarily where I would want to work.  If the battery
has been shot, then the situation is recoverable at some (additional)
expense.  I would be prepared to replace the battery again if I could be
sure that the motherboard is otherwise OK.

I gather that battery analysers are available for lots of loot, so I'll
try ringing around to see if any repair shops have one and can test the
thing out.
