It's ‘userspace’ programs which are interpreting the power situation and
forcing you to shut down, not the Linux kernel.

Good Point. I've got an ageing copy of Parted Magic, which should allow
me to boot into the console.

If not, I'll download something that does.

Probably have to do it tomorrow now.
