If you edit your zone files with vi, you're right, it's easy because most nameserver software keeps up with new RRTYPEs. For the other 99.9% of us, we provision our DNS through some kind of web crudware, and the crudware takes between a long time and forever to handle new RRTYPEs. That's the reality that pushes us to underscore tagged TXT records, since the crudware handles that. Over a decade ago I proposed an extension language that the crudware could use to provision new types automatically.
