Other industries do - graphical artists have portfolios, every other branch of engineering has formal CPD courses and certification, and so forth. Just because we've not thought of it yet doesn't mean it's impossible :D Also, even our current ideas can be refined - look at coderscv.com for example. Very interesting way to present developer's CVs. Perhaps we need a sysadminscv.com? In one situation, you're worried about responding to a technical problem and finding a solution; in the other, you're worrying that next month's salary and your family's financial security rely on your impressing another person. One's technical, one's interpersonal - different skillsets. One's objective, one's subjective - different metrics.
