I have often wondered if UCT and Monte Carlo play-outs would have even been discovered a few years ago. It could very well be that this technology HAD to wait for today. Mogo and CrazyStone would not be impressive on a 386.
I heard about MonteCarlo go in the late-90s when I read a paper by Bernd Bruegmann (Monte Carlo Go, 1993). This paper is quoted by most authors as (one of) the earliest. 'Gobble' did of course not play very well for the reason you mention above.
