Isn't that a time control not usually played in serious games?

The humans lost on time because they didn't allocate their time wisely.
They would have easily beat weaker opponents at this same time control.

I'm not saying this is a good time control for people but they did agree
on that time control and should plan accordingly.   

I would prefer something a lot more intelligent, like the Fischer clock
where N seconds get immediately added to the clock after each move.
For a relatively quick game it could be 5 minutes + 3 seconds per move.
You can even build up extra time on your clock for tougher moves by
playing a few move more quickly.
