I actually got a kick out of the response from the surgeon when I asked about what to do for the next episode. He said, “hype yourself up with as much medication as possible, get comfortable in bed, grab a bottle of scotch and call me.”
And yes, I’m still on a bunch of medication and can’t lift anything for 3 months. Tough to sail under those conditions. I switch to using 1 Advil, 1 Tylenol, and got a TENS unit and cranked it way up. It worked a treat 😊 Joe Della Barba From: Paul Hood via CnC-List <cnc-list@cnc-list.com <mailto:cnc-list@cnc-list.com> > Sent: Tuesday, May 6, 2025 4:21 PM To: 'Stus-List' <cnc-list@cnc-list.com <mailto:cnc-list@cnc-list.com> > Cc: Paul Hood <paul.h...@rogers.com <mailto:paul.h...@rogers.com> > Subject: [EXTERNAL] Stus-List Re: Fleet Status Check I know the pain. I have for 12 weeks now 3 herniated discs pronouncing on both sides of spine and a pinched nerve that took me to the hospital for 8 days. The pain is down the right side to the toes and although I’m walking gently with a cane, at least I’m moving. Keeping the boat covered until I can actually sail it….might be a long summer. Surgeon said to let it heal naturally and if it returns for a second run, then we’ll do surgery. Might be a lost summer here on Georgian Bay. Touche' is doing great! It's in the best condition ever. It sits in its slip ready to cruise east to Pensacola or beyond. Its owner, however, is not great. A few weeks ago, I was cleaning and prepping Touche' to head east. I had crew scheduled. I was excited to try out the new solar panels for some extended anchoring out around the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The weather was looking awesome. Cool nights and southerly winds for anchoring on the north side of the islands. Then I slipped while cleaning the boat. Caught myself. Didn't think much about it until a couple days later when I developed sciatica type pain and significant weakness in my right leg. Deemed it unsafe to move around the boat with 1.25 of 2 legs. MRI showed a bulging disc and a couple other issues. Boo! Got a spinal steroid shot to kill the pain. Surgery this Thursday. 3-6 month recovery. I missed 2-3 weeks of some of the best cruising weather I've seen in recent years. Really bummed. By the time I recover, the summer heat will be here. 😡🤬☹️ Arrrrgh!! -- Dennis C.
