Len,
     You bring up a good point.  I have the rotten feeling that the plate
may be attached with Plexus.  Having just replaced my window and ruining a
lot of gelcoat trying to remove them, I can tell you it won't be easy.  A
fixture and a router may be the only way to get the old ones off.
