Hi Bob,
When I had the 1972 C&C27 w/ an A-4, I wondered what was in that
wrap. I loosened the wire and lots of rust fell out. I was
horrified, I can't afford a mechanic! It took a while with
penetrating oil to get the nuts & bolts off. I didn't know what to
call it, so I went to Tacoma Screw, a good industrial supplier. In
my best, brave "tough guy" voice, I slammed it down on the counter
and asked, "Who fixes this shit around here?" The counter man sent
me to USflex about a mile away. I showed it to the guy there and he
asked when do you need it? "When it's not a rush!" How about
tomorrow after 2, was the reply. And what's it going to cost me? 38
bucks. When I came back the next day they had jigged it, up sawed
off the rusty stuff, and replaced the raiser with a stainless steel
"slinky". When I put it back on the boat, all the bolt holes were
perfect! It was one of the most successful fixes ever. . .
Oh yea, I live in Ballard, which used to be the Scandahoovian fishing
center of Seattle. You may be looking for a muffler shop that does
fancy work for the punks. . .
Good luck, Lee
I replaced one on my C&C 27 that had an A4 engine. I used stainless
steel threaded pipe and elbows, all wrapped with several layers of a
proprietary heat blanket that I had access to because I was studying
that blanket material for fire safety applications on warships. I
think it might be a good idea to use more than a wrap of asbestos
tape for hot pipe lagging and I definitely recommend that you spend
the extra cash and go with stainless pipe and elbows. By the way, I
thought asbestos products were no longer available for such use.

Subject: Stus-List Exhaust Riser Replacement
~5 years ago Ox's ol' Onan waterlift muffler rusted out. I replaced
it with a (Vetus?) fiberglass unit and had to replace the exhaust
riser in the process. Being thrifty, I went with Home Depot 1.25"
galvanized pipe and a wrap of asbestos tape.
Well, five years later (last week), Ox's exhaust riser collapsed.
FWIW, most of the disintegration was toward the exhaust manifold.
I'm thinking of staying with cheap galvanized pipe but this time
painting it with a high-temperature paint inside and out. Opinions
or predictions?

P.S. The waterlift muffler is fine.
