The current wraps on the market are not asbestos ... I think the current standard product is a fiberglass composite material usually. You should be able to pick it up at any auto parts store.
My boat gave me quite a scare on several fronts ... the riser was too close to the underside of the cockpit floor and was actually banging against it, which destroyed the wrap. The bare exhaust riser started the adjacent wood backing block on the cockpit drain smoldering and melted the plastic drain itself. After getting back alongside I wasn’t sure if the wrap was asbestos or not (and a reminder and warning to all .... boats built in the 70’s certainly could have asbestos wrap!). I actually had a hazmat company come down to the boat and take a sample for testing ... it wasn’t asbestos (and it stands to reason ... hard to imagine it was the original riser) on a 1979 boat). The riser was replaced with a lower one and it was angled a bit coming off the manifold to keep it as far away from the cockpit drains as possible, which I replaced with new. Also added a vented loop, which was missing from the old setup and a new Vetus waterlift with the adjustable inlet / outlet to aid in lining-up the whole affair. I used stainless steel threaded pipe and elbows, all wrapped with several layers of a proprietary heat blanket that I had access to because I was studying that blanket material for fire safety applications on warships. I think it might be a good idea to use more than a wrap of asbestos tape for hot pipe lagging and I definitely recommend that you spend the extra cash and go with stainless pipe and elbows. By the way, I thought asbestos products were no longer available for such use. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: CnC-List [mailto:cnc-list-boun...@cnc-list.com] On Behalf Of bobmor99 . I replaced it with a (Vetus?) fiberglass unit and had to replace the exhaust riser in the process. Being thrifty, I went with Home Depot 1.25" galvanized pipe and a wrap of asbestos tape. Well, five years later (last week), Ox's exhaust riser collapsed. FWIW, most of the disintegration was toward the exhaust manifold. I'm thinking of staying with cheap galvanized pipe but this time painting it with a high-temperature paint inside and out. Opinions or predictions? Bob M Ox 33-1 Jax, FL P.S. The waterlift muffler is fine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com
