I like my Raymarine ST 60 plus package...the 3 displays (speed depth and
wind) plus 1 extra (a graphics display) are mounted above the companionway
in a pod where everyone in the cockpit can see them...they have performed
flawlessly for about 5 years and everything stays on the boat year
round...they replaced some older B&G gear which also was very good for its
time but got to the point whre I could not get the electronics fixed right
anymore

Subject: Re: Stus-List Shopping for Depth Sounders and Knot meters

Jim: I've had Raymarine gear on my boats for many years, and have sold and
installed a ton of it on other boats. Once in a while a failure occurs, but
from my point of view they are rare. I personally have not had any failures
that could not be traced to wiring/connection/connector problems. I work
with The Binnacle where we sell other brands too such as Garmin and
Hummingbird. My sense is that marine electronics are becoming much like
automobiles and TV's in that all brands are quite reliable and work well in
adverse conditions. Also, many of the problems that appeared to be endemic
years ago are now things of the past.

find one that fits in the old instruments panel above the companionway.

products though they're rectangular and pricey and seem to have all the same
glitches and short lifespans that come with these electronics, particularly
depth sounders.
