While this response has very little to do with selecting a depth sounder, it's
a solution for the old holes. A long time ago when I bought my boat it came
with round instruments. When they were no longer useful, I changed to square
instruments--these were also bulkhead mounted by my companionway. I used a
piece of teak beneath to hide the old holes completely, like many others. Then
I got an instrument pod and new instruments to go in the pod. I converted the
old area on the bulkhead with the old holes to a fixed port which I tailored to
match the classic C&C design (same radius corners, same type of mount, and same
color Plexiglas as my other windows)--it's looks like it came from the factory
that way! It provides some much needed daylight into the quarter berth area.
