The J-24 I steer has TackTick. It is so flexible, as Edd said, we move the
instruments around to suit. Upwind, they are on the mast, but downwind, I like
one of them to be closer, so I can steer to the wind angle. The wind unit is
wireless and we haven't ever had a problem, it's self charging, as are the
instruments (each of which can display two things at a time from a vast menu).
The only wire is from the depth sounder to the 'computer' and to power. Good
stuff, if I were doing it on my boat (again), I would go that way.

  Jim,

I would seriously look into the TackTick line from Raymarine. I’ve had no
problems with it at all, only needs one transducer and is almost completely
wireless. The instruments are movable, so you can set up mounts inside and/or
outside.

I have the depth, speed and wind package, though haven’t set up the wind
instrument yet (but the display does give perfect readings of wind direction
and wind speed inside the box.)

  All the best,

  Edd

  Hey Gang,

I'm shopping for a new depth sounder and a new knot meter for the old C&C 38
I'm buying. I'm not impressed with my choices, especially if I try to find one
that fits in the old instruments panel above the companionway.

I could go the route of Moor Instruments with their old round instrument
style, but worried about the quality. I could pay more and get the Raymarine
products though they're rectangular and pricey and seem to have all the same
glitches and short lifespans that come with these electronics, particularly
depth sounders.

So I'm wondering if any of you swear by the reliability and/or service of one
brand or another, or if you've had good or bad experiences with Raymarine, Moor
or other brands like Fiara, Hawkeye or Hummingbird.

  Thanks,
