The different types of reduction gears (transmissions) and propellers each have
their own manufacturer's recommended procedure. A search on the internets or a
read through the owner's manual will likely indicate the manufacturer's
preference.

Calypso's Borg-Warner Velvet Drive (series 71) reduction gear and feathering
MAX prop combo requires the reduction gear to be in gear (typically forward)
when the auxiliary engine is shut down. The Velvet Drive uses hydraulic
pressure provided by the engine rotation to stop the shaft on shut down. In
the few seconds after the engine shut down, the reduction gear stops the shaft
from rotating which allows the MAX prop to feather.

Once the MAX prop has feathered the Velvet Drive reduction gear can be shifted
to neutral or reverse. I have often read of reverse being recommended but not
required. On Calypso we use reverse largely because it places the shift handle
out of the way avoiding a tangle with a sheet. If the MAX prop does not
feather, the noise from the prop driven reduction gear rotation will indicate
further action is required.

On a boat with a fixed prop (or other non-feathering type of prop) and a
non-locking reduction gear, a shaft brake may be recommended to prevent damage
from excessive rotation underway. A non-geared folding prop is less likely to
create rotation underway regardless of what is done with the reduction gear.

My comments are all based on a shaft based installations with Yanmar, Volvo,
Universal, and Perkins engines with various but mostly hydraulic reduction
gears coupled to fixed, folding, and feathering propellers. I have no
experience with sail drives which likely have their own requirements and
practices to avoid damage or excessive wear and tear.

in gear while sailing not recommended...however often prop does not turn while
sailing &transmission not turning.....put in neutral is best idea...
