Why put the ear on the gears (free spinning?).  My fixed blade is kept in
gear (already had to have the transmission worked on once) and I have marked
the shaft so that I can lock the blades (2-bladed) in the shadow of the
strut for at least 1 of the blades.

Jonathan, that's correct. With a fixed prop the transmission should be
neutral.
