I have seen this. Progression is from having a boat, to chartering in
different areas (that is the good side of it), to chartering
infrequently in your home area, to not sailing at all (the bad).

Has to be carefully done. My vote would be for a lesser maintenance and
cost and more easily crewed smaller boat that does not tie up a lot of
money.

Subject: Re: Stus-List Transitioning from Racing to Cruising?

I'm going through the same thought process this year.

Where I lived before, I was lucky enough to be able to pull together a
crew from among friends and we grew to be a pretty good team. We
relocated last year and I started building a crew from scratch where we
didn't know anyone. We won two regattas last year with the old crew,
who I imported for the weekend, but the rest of the year was highly
frustrating and very stressful.

I'm considering not trying again this year - I have an offer to crew on
another boat, and my wife won't mind too much, but then I have to decide
whether it's worth keeping a boat at all with vastly reduced use (and an
endless maintenance list), or sailing my Laser off the beach and
chartering a couple of weeks in the summer.

        Listers,

Though I thought this day would never come (and I'm not saying
it has yet), but given the difficulties in lining up crew, keeping them
committed on a regular basis, and the costs, I'd like to know people's
experiences in transitioning from racing their C&C to a life of
cruising.

Anyone here done it? Are you happy you did? I'm very curious to
hear your stories, including the successes and regrets, if any.
