Edd, and others

Racing and cruising are NOT mutually exclusive.  We've both raced and cruised
Touche' since purchase in 1999.  We took a hiatus from racing for 3-4 years and
are now back rebuilding our race program but to a much more relaxed
philosophy.  We are racing with a local sailing group which is more interested
in sailing than competing.  The race is more of an excuse to get out on the
water.  There is less emphasis on winning.  This allows us to keep the pots,
pans, and most importantly, the blender on board.  Nothing like rounding the
windward mark to the sound of frozen margaritas in the blender.  "Hoist!
Hoist! Pour!"

We race mostly non-spinnaker now but if we ever rebuild our racing program to a
competitive level, we can strip the boat and go mix it up with the foaming at
the mouth racers.  We find we enjoy racing more with the reduced emphasis on
competing.

I also bought a Lido 14 dinghy.  Takes 2 to sail.  A bunch of us more mature
sailors race these for fun.  Lot easier to find one other person than several
for a crew.

Another option for your racing fix is radio controlled sailboats.  I have a
Victoria.  We have an active fleet in Mandeville.  A couple of the guys are
very competitive in national Victoria regattas.

As for cruising, we have cruised from Lake Pontchartrain to Pensacola the last
10 years.  First, it was for only a week.  Now we leave the boat in Pensacola
for 3-5 months.  We really enjoy the cruising part of our sailing.  We also
cruise the barrier islands off the Mississippi coast.

When we can't get crew on Touche', I occasionally crew on other boats.  This is
a great way to get my racing fix without the expense.  It's also one of the
best ways to improve your racing skills.

A good compromise is point to point distance racing.  If there are some in your
area, sign up non-spinnaker, throw together a ragtag crew and go sailing.

Finding a good racing/cruising balance is a personal decision.  Some never
cruise, some never race.
