If you want verbose messages at boot, stop the boot process at the grub prompt (where you select which kernel to boot with.) If it does not show up, hold down 'Shift' during the boot process.
Edit the line using 'e' (there might be one more step first, I'm not sure.) Somewhere on the line there should be "splash" or "splash quiet". Change that text to "text". Finally, boot (I think you press ctrl-x to boot, but there should be instructions on screen at this point.) This should allow you to see the messages at boot instead of the GUI. Note, however, that it will probably not bring up the login manager or X. The change is not permanent, so the next time you reboot, it will be back to it's old splash screen. If "text" didn't work, just try removing "splash quiet" altogether. It will likely boot into the login manager, however, and your boot messages will be wiped off the screen (but stored in files in /var/log/) -Mark C.
