Maybe grab the alternate install ISO. It gives you much more control over the installation, and I've found that with Kubuntu at least the alternate install is the most reliable method for a successful install.

There is no SU password on installation. You should have been asked for the first user. That user has sudo privileges. So you can log in as that user (assuming keyboard works), and then do "sudo su" to get to a root shell.

I haven't tried the latest (11.10) yet. Experience tells me to wait a few weeks - even if just to miss the rush and way slow downloads from the *buntu servers. In a few days the rush will calm down. But as with any new OS, give it a week or three to let it stabilize some.

Regarding the boot record... once you can issue commands to the box, open a shell and do "dmesg". This shows you the typical boot sequence, and more. And then there are always the log files under /var/log that can be examined...

None of that helps with your keyboard/mouse issues though. Who still uses a serial mouse though???? Do they still make the things? :)

Hope that helps some.

It should be really easy to install Ubuntu.

Now I need help. Apparently the serial mouse is not configured in. They
didn't give me the chance to configure the disk drives. I was the passenger in
the new jet.

To me it seems the Captain is lost.

So the O/S is in. The KB won't work and the Mouse won't work. Who in their
right mind hooks X up to the installer. Its a simple operation. Load some
files in.

We need to fix this.

So I am the passenger and I have the new 'puter running but I was not asked durin
the install for an su psswd abd after doing the install my KB& mice won't work.

What should be done is what the OpenBSD team does. Show the boot record. Be open.
Instead I get in Ubuntu a whole lot of "trust me" dots and some graphics.
