Thanks for your reply.  You were right about the glitches associated with my
"bright" idea.  When I tried it I couldn't get to kde at all!  Fortunately
 I was able to start gnome and from there I managed to get back to where I
was earlier this morning.

Unfortunately, the Alt-D Alt-A trick didn't work: nothing happened.
 Similarly, when I right-click on the desktop nothing happens.  I think you
are right when you suggest that I'm getting a "search and launch" display.
 It looks similar to the kubuntu screen on my netbook which I'll bring to
tonight's meeting.

I guess I can live with things the way they are now.  It's less convenient
than the earlier set up (eg. kde 3) because I can't add applications which
aren't "widgets" to the task bar.
