Hendrik, Thsnks for your detailed help. I think I got most of it right. I now have a panel containing the icons for most of my applications.
But I can't have done everything correctly because the desk top looks like it did a few days ago. There is a wide strip at the top containing icons labeled "KMail" and "System Settings". Just below that is a box containing "Enter your query here". Then there is a set of 10 icons which mimic entries in "Applications Launcher". I tried right clicking on the desk top hoping to make further adjustments but nothing happened.
