A few things for you...

First, it sounds like your current desktop *may* be showing the Activities desktop. (Hitting Alt-D then Alt-A reveals the activity switcher). While activities can be fun to play with, it's probably not quite what you want.

Next, you *could* delete your /home/youruser/.kde folder. This would reset KDE to a default environment. BUT, and a BIG BUT!! - you would loose all your personalization and application configurations.

Last option I can think of - within your .kde folder, there is a config file you can remove to just reset the panels to the default. But I don't recall which file. A Google search for "kde recover panel" should lead you in the right direction - I hope.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Hendrik,

Thsnks for your detailed help. I think I got most of it right. I now
have a panel containing the icons for most of my applications.

But I can't have done everything correctly because the desk top looks
like it did a few days ago. There is a wide strip at the top containing
icons labeled "KMail" and "System Settings". Just below that is a box
containing "Enter your query here". Then there is a set of 10 icons
which mimic entries in "Applications Launcher". I tried right clicking
on the desk top hoping to make further adjustments but nothing happened.
