Thanks for the tips.  I tried hitting Alt-D and the Alt-A on the desk top
and in a terminal, both as robin and as su,  but nothing happened.

But your second tip gave  me an idea.   I have an earlier version of
/home/robin/.kde on a backup that was created before this problem occurred.
So it seems to me that I could: 1) Rename, or move, the current (bad)
/home/robin/.kde on my HD.  2) Copy the earlier (good) /home/robin/.kde from
the backup on an external HD to the HD on my PC. 3) Reboot.  Do you think
that would work?
