For clojure 1.3, I actually found a small bug in the accompanying son library. I tried to submit a patch via a github pull request. But it turns out that's not the correct path to take. You have to sign a "Contributor's Agreement", then submit a patch to Jira. So I haven't had the problem your friend experienced. If it has been a problem in the past, it seems to have improved at this point.
