You can also code backup agents for SQL Server, which is what
Veritas/Symantec's network backup offering does, iirc (or rather you
can buy one as an option).

I find it just as easy to schedule a to-file backup using SQL
Server's builtin backup agent though; you could most likely achieve
the same result using a Client Run Before script that does the
requried SQL commands.
