You are definitely allowed to own a gun in NYC. They require a permit for long guns and a license for hand guns. Historically licensing has not been considered an infringement on the 2nd amendment. I agree that may change with the current court. I'm not saying it's right, wrong, or otherwise, I'm just saying as a fact you will not be arrested for owning a gun in NYC.
