two crumple zones hitting each other vs one crumple zone hitting a wall, makes off the cuff sense to me... two old, non crumple zone, cars hitting each other would seem like what it would take to get a 120 mph impact. Those crumple zones make a monster difference...

    Apparently the slope on the bottom is to make your tires ride up
    so you redirect back into your own lane (though possibly flipped
    over) whereas a flat wall might make you flip into the oncoming
    lane. ____
