It was somewhat counter intuitive as I recall, then they went into the physics 
of the situation.  The end result was that going 60 mph into an immovable 
object really did the same amount of damage as going 60 into a car coming at 
you at 60.  So the whole damage equivalent to going 120 was a myth.

There would be the difference between colliding with an "almost" immovable 
object (wall) versus colliding with a vehicle that has some semblance of a 
crush zone. I don't know how much that difference would be.

  Apparently the slope on the bottom is to make your tires ride up so you 
redirect back into your own lane (though possibly flipped over) whereas a flat 
wall might make you flip into the oncoming lane.
