I don't need to pay recurring fees for software I develop myself which makes it a different question: it's not what do I have to choose from where very option costs money, it's do I want to develop this myself or is my time better spent on something else.
I'm happy to pay for service/support and permanent licenses/keys, but less so for activation keys that self destruct. Obviously I have to pay utilities too.
I've contributed to open source projects and haven't felt the need to get recurring payments on my contributions. There's a lot of people that feel the same way otherwise they wouldn't be OSS developers. On the other hand, if you want my time for one on one support, that's worth money.
