Hello,

Forwarding this since it seems it did not reach the list...
And, yes, GPL allows selling for profit.

Hello people,

I want to say upfront that I know I am not at all in a position to
speak for the project, nor do I consider myself
entitled to any privilege within the project (on the contrary, I am a
lazy bastard :-D ).

That being said I think that I can go on and speak my mind.

I think that any of us knows the financial situation of any/all of the
other team members, thus can't judge if/who would
benefit most of them. OTOH, if any of the money goes to any particular
person this can and will lead to tensions and all
sorts of disputes, finally damaging the project. I know I have seen
this happening.

So the question is, if this money comes down Wormux' road, how could
the project benefit from the money in a sensibly
fair and useful way without being too discriminatory?

I think the answer lies within the following options:
- organize a face to face meeting in some place[1] in order to
organize a bug squashing party, a development work
session and/or a release planning session (DebConf is such an event)
- buy hardware and implement some auto builders (preferably machines
supporting XEN in order to be able to run parallel
builders on different distros at a time)
- organize a wormux social meeting in order to meet, get to know each
other better (but I am sure this would surely
"degenerate" into the first type :-D ); if the meeting remains at a
social level, I am sure the team would work better
in the end anyway
- set bids for different feature requests/bug fixes (this is tricky
since there should be some party judging if the
issue was dealt with; otoh, we could set a rule to not allow people
from within the project to participate, this way
attracting fresh blood into the project).

Of course, choosing one of the options above depends a lot on the
money available.

I also know that there is a problem of having some kind of formal
organization to take care of the funds, but I am sure
we can come up with something, if we consider that is necessary (SPI
comes to mind; I am sure there are other options in
France or in some other part of the world).

What do others think? Any other ideas about spending the money?
