If I set the prefdm runlevel to 3 it simply launches an X desktop. I'd like to start up in runlevel 3 and not have to launch into X.
I tried reloading RH 7.2 with gnome and got a little further (sort of). The bottom line is that my standard RH 7.2 installation with either kde or gnome with runlevel 3 does not seem to have an xdm running (xdm, kdm, gdm or whatever). Therefore, port 177 is not open for XDMCP and I just get a grey screen from vncviewer. If I start a gnome session, either just from the console or changing the prefdm runlevel to 3 in inittab, vnc works fine. Obviously this is because I now have an xdm listening for XDMCP (this didn't work for kde but I'll worry about that later). So...my specific question is: how do I get an xdm (pref. kdm) running on RH 7.2, with runlevel 3 without launching an X desktop? Everyone's patience with me is appreciated. I realise this is one of the most common issues in the archives but I can't find a specific answer after hours of searching! TIA.
