Jeff, `ps -A | grep dm` doesn't show anything (well, sendmail :) ).
I tried to follow this through: inittab starts a script called 'prefdm' which appears to identify the correct dm and start it with the -nodaemon switch. I understand this suppresses kdm from running in the background? This is at the edge of my depth. Is this setup relevant to the problem and how do I change it?
