TightVNC has the ability to be immensly faster over slow pipes.

Other than the author, there is a good chance I have been working with
it the longest.  We use it every day.  

Why it is that TightVNC works, and how to make it work well is not at
all obvious to the novice.  When used improperly, TightVNC can be
slower than "regular" VNC.  But if low-bandwidth connections area all
you have, and you are willing and able to optimize the screen settings
of the server system (size, color depth, background, etc.) TightVNC can
turn an "impossible" situation into a solved problem in a half hour.
