I am happy with a simple and well organized VNC, and several specialized / experimental /applied versions, but I guess an additional problem with real-vnc in including external code contributions is that RealVNC as a company may try to license the code or particular developments to other companies in licensing terms other than GPL. They may do that only while they are authors of every line in the source code.
