Scooter,
Keep in mind that unless you are using Base or the Accessibility
features, you don't need Java to run OpenOffice (AOO) or LibreOffice (LO).
I am not sure what TB needs Java for. I know some websites use it,
since there are TB configuration options to disable certain Java
features for website access. Also, running Mozilla's update checker (I
can't seem to find it now) will flag Java as needing update if it is out
of date.
I am running Slackware Linux and LO 3.5.7.2 and I have not had any
problems with TB or Firefox. However, I am not on the bleeding edge. I
am still running TB 2.0.0.24 and Firefox 3.0.19. They work, so why update.
I use Base heavily, but only as a client to MySQL. I rely on it for my
critical database maintenance The MySQL connector also uses Java. The
only show-stopper problems I have with LO Base center on the Oracle
Report Builder (ORB). I have inventory database tables with 5000
records and still growing. Creating a report on this table brings ORB
to its knees. Note that it also brought OpenOffice 3.3 ORB to its
knees! So it isn't a problem unique to LO and it is ongoing. I have
found another report builder, DataVision, which works much better, but
it too has some problems. The worst is that many features are not
implemented yet, but development seems to have stopped. The latest
version is dated June 2008. Even so, it is still more useful to me than
ORB. Guess what!? DataVision is written in Java! I am familiar with
C/C++ programming, but not Java. So I acquired a Java book and hope to
learn enough to fix some of the DataVision problems. In the meantime, I
found work-arounds to keep me going.
It is my understanding that the number of Base developers on the AOO and
LO teams is limited. That is why Base fixes are slow in coming. I also
understand that the entities involved are trying to resolve that. I am
hopeful that Base development will pick up and some of these bugs will
be fixed. I hear that there is also an effort in the LO community to
toss out Java for all LO coding. That may improve things too.
As of this time, I have not seen this Oracle/Java6 issue posted on the
LO user forum. You might want to "cross-post" it there also. I am sure
there are people on that forum that would be interested to know of
Oracle's decision. If you want me to post it for you, I am willing to
do that.
Take care.

Thanks Girvin,
I run Windows 7x64 Home Premium.
AOO is the ONLY piece of my software that requires JRE 6. Thunderbird
(TB) seems to run OK without it, although its been squirrely for the
last few months (cause unknown). I've already installed two
substitutes for the absolute failure of TB, both paid for programs. I
am prepared, as best I can be.
I agree with your last paragraph 100%.
AOO will be unusable if they don't upgrade, one way or the other.
Libra Office will be in the same boat, so can't go there either. Next
bet is Google, but I really don't like their interface.
I used the AOO Database portion, but didn't depend on its usefulness,
so /that/ isn't a major loss, for me. I don't trust the Apache
Foundation to actually /Fix /this JRE issue before February since
there has been no authoritative effort to notify the group of the issue.
The notification came straight from an Oracle email.
Take Care.

Why has this issue not been mentioned?
last publicly available release of Oracle JDK 6 is to be released in
*February, 2013*.
This means that after February 19, 2013, all newsecurity updates
<#>, patches and fixes for Java SE 6 and Java SE 5 will only be
available through My Oracle Support and will thus require a
commercial license with Oracle

I don't have an answer to why this has not been mentioned in this
forum. It has now!
And I just went through the pain of creating an Oracle account to
gain access to their archives for the old (Java 6) versions!
Time to resurrect Blackdown Java?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackdown_Java
What about that Free Software Foundation (GNU) Java? I have a Java
RE called Free Software Foundation 1.4.2 on my Slackware Linux 12.2
system. A look at their website looks like it is no longer active.
Maybe it is time for AOO to either code for Java 7 or remove Java
dependencies altogether.
Keep in mind that AOO is not the only app that uses Java. Mozilla
immediately comes to mind. They will most likely have to change also.
