Yes, I´ve seen those reports, but nothing was more specific than "Base runs slow on JRE7" or " "AOO couldn´t detect the installed Java 7", if I remember correctly. I wish those reports could be translated into bugs.sun.com or OpenJDK defect reports, which can then be *confirmed* by the JRE/OpenJDK devs as a known defect. Until then, those are unconfirmed reports. > I, and probably many > others on this forum, have been sticking with Java6 until these problems > were resolved. From what you say, maybe they are and I should take another > look at Java7. You lose nothing by trying. The JRE7 can be later uninstalled if it doesn´t suit your needs. My point was, that it´s a bit unreasonable to complain because an old java version is getting EOL´d, as that was the case with Sun Microsystems on every past version at some point. ie I see nobody complaining that Java 1.1, or 1.2, or 1.3 or even 1.4 is no longer supported. Java´s philosphy has always been "use the latest JRE, and your apps just keep running, if not, it´s a bug". There´s good reasons to always use the latest available JRE, from security to performance and features point of view. Also, the subject line of your email was inflammatory "Oracle bad news", which as usual can quickly degenerate into "bad Oracle is making Java non-free" by the usual spinners. When it should actually have read "Java 6 is getting phased out". Oracle initially planned Java 6 EOL´d by the middle of this year and postponed the EOL´d date already to give enough time for everyone to plan accordingly... Feb 2012: Oracle commutes end of life on Java 6 http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Oracle-commutes-end-of-life-on-Java-6-1437594.html "Oracle has postponed the planned end of life for Java SE 6. Originally, JDK (Java Development Kit) and Java SE 6 were due to reach end of life in July 2012, but that date has been pushed back to November 2012. Oracle says the move is to allow more time for the transition to JDK 7 and the company has updated the support roadmap to reflect that change. " August 2012: Java 6 to be supported until February 2013 http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Java-6-to-be-supported-till-Feb-2013-1663922.html So the EOL date has been postponed twice already. Very few people can say they have not heard about it before. JRE6 is at UPDATE 37 already, that´s higher than every past versions of Java.... Plus, the Java 6 download page at http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_6.xml ...clearly states "We highly recommend downloading and installing Java 7. The latest release for Java contains many new features, performance enhancements, and bug fixes to improve the running of Java Applets or applications. Java SE 6 End of Public Updates: After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. " So, it strikes me a little bit odd that some people come with a "OMG bad Oracle is killing Java 6, the sky is falling" attitude when it´s clear that Java 6 was getting phased out for over a year.
