The Oracle blog post that is being quoted was only posted on 2012-12-03. Apparently, the oversight is with regard to the Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap, here: <http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html>.
What is telling, for me, is that the End of Public Updates Notification apparently happened in February 2011. (And the end of Java SE 7 Public updates will be in July 2014, barely more than a year after the Java SE 6 cut-off, with no clue when the successor of Java SE 7 will come into use.) I'm not sure what these terms mean. I still receive automatic updates from Oracle for the Java 6 SE installations on various of my computers. In any case, it is valuable that this has been raised as an issue. I have no idea how it will be addressed, but it is good to have the project's attention drawn to it. - Dennis -----Original Message----- From: Scooter C [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2012 11:19 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Oracle Bad news JDK 6 will no longer be free which screws AOO usage Thanks Girvin, I run Windows 7x64 Home Premium. AOO is the ONLY piece of my software that requires JRE 6. Thunderbird (TB) seems to run OK without it, although its been squirrely for the last few months (cause unknown). I've already installed two substitutes for the absolute failure of TB, both paid for programs. I am prepared, as best I can be. I agree with your last paragraph 100%. AOO will be unusable if they don't upgrade, one way or the other. Libra Office will be in the same boat, so can't go there either. Next bet is Google, but I really don't like their interface. I used the AOO Database portion, but didn't depend on its usefulness, so /that/ isn't a major loss, for me. I don't trust the Apache Foundation to actually /Fix /this JRE issue before February since there has been no authoritative effort to notify the group of the issue. The notification came straight from an Oracle email. Take Care. Scooter College Park, MD USA Girvin R.
